Discussions (original title, right?)

Contributor: sophie2229 sophie2229
I noticed today that you can't comment on comparative discussions unless you've published reviews on at least one of the items being compared. While this idea is good in theory, I saw a flaw in it when I went to make a comment on a discussion on a product that I previously bought - and I couldn't because I hadn't published a review on it.

Personally I think that this rule might prevent valuable information from contributors from entering the forums.

Any thoughts?

I hope the choices were about whether we like the limited/invitation only discussions. I don't like them. I couldn't comment on a thread even though I own one of the products being discussed. I thought it was very limiting to the discussion. I was glad a lot of other people had reviewed some of the specified toys, though, so some feedback could be given.

I haven't come across one of these that are limited or invitation only. I've seen comparative discussions that I can comment on though, so I am just confused.

I believe that the person starting the discussion chooses who is allowed to comment. It can be limited to people who have written reviews or it can be open to the general public.

I encountered the same problem on a thread recently.

The one you specified in your original post was limited. Not sure if it was the same one I saw, but the one I saw said "Invited: Reviewers of the products compared." That's all I meant by "invitation only."

The one I specified in my original post? Do you mean that Sophie mentioned? I'm really confused now lol

I never noticed the Invited deal.

Ok so now I am really curious. Anybody have a link to one?

This only happens when the user only invites those who have reviewed. I like my comparative discussions to be open to everyone because not everyone who owns something writes a review for it.

I think I found it, just haven't actually come across one that isn't set up as "all users". If you go into any comparitive discussion near the top it says "invited:" and then it'll say who was invited to answer the poll/discussion.

link Found this one, first time I have ever seen this. I agree that this may limit the responses. Not sure I like it.

Ahhh ok I do remember seeing that there I just didn't realize at the time that it actually meant anything other than "this is who I'd LIKE to have answer". I didn't notice that it didn't let people comment because I had reviewed the Liv so I guess that makes it allow me to post.

so now *I* missed the part where the contributor chose to invite only users of the products! oops? Well since it's the user's thread and if the user wanted the extra security of being able to read commenters' reviews, then it makes sense. I just thought it was an odd policy for EF to have. But I can see why it's an option.

While I understand the theory, I agree that perhaps it's not beneficial... But I haven't tried to post on one and been rejected yet. Though I admit, I don't go post on many comparative discussions because most of the time, I don't own the items.

I wouldn't set my discussion up that way because there are lots of people who own the toys you're interested it and just haven't reviewed them. But if someone wants to pick that option to ensure they're not getting random votes then that's their choice. The review that was linked to is the only one I've ever seen like that. Most of them are open to all users.

I feel the same way I do. Just because I haven't reviewed a product doesn't mean that I don't know a lot of useful things about it.

I voted other and indifferent. Other because I didn't know this was an option tell I read this thread. indifferent because i don't care either way if someone uses this option.

yeaa they should fix that

I guess I can see the point of having the option but, like it's been pointed out, not everyone who owns a toy reviews it. You are cutting out a potential source of information when you make it exclusive.

some people put it as the option i guess they want to weed out irrelevant answers

I agree that you should at least have some experience with the item, but not necessarily had to post a review.

I've tried out a lot of products in local store that I didn't end up buying. I still can tell people a thing or 2 about those products. I also own 2 to 3 times more products than the amount I write reviews for.

It depends on how you set them. If you (the original poster) sets the discussion, you can choose who is able to respond to it.
