Name Changes - former name still shows

Contributor: Rockin' Rockin'
Many of us have seen contributors change their names for various reasons. The contributor's original name still shows up at the end of the url for their profile page. For example, a long time ago, Sienna changed her name to Airlia, but her profile page address terminates with /sienna/ instead of her new name.

While this might not be a big deal to some people, if someone changes their name for security reasons or some other more serious reason, perhaps they'd want their former name to go away.

What do y'all think about this issue? Would it be possible to rename the profile directory when a contributor changes their name?

I noticed this too with my recent name change. While it isn't a security reason for me, it still would be a nice thing. But it doesn't really effect me if it isn't changed.

Oh wow. Not something that occured to me until you mentioned it. But I bet if there were security issues that the people at EF would help a contributor change the profile directory for them. But otherwise I bet it would be too much work to do it for just everyone... But this is something I have no idea about.

I'd like to second this request, although I realize it's not the easiest change to make at this point. If someone gets caught, I think they'd like to erase the evidence -- not by deleting reviews, but in the manner that LJ and other sites use. The url with the old name in it ceases to work, the same url with the new name inserted does work, and the invisible static url never shows anywhere. On fanfiction.net, for example, a person could change their name constantly and since the static url remained the same, links within the site would not break, but links from the outside, using the old name, would. I think this is ideal, as it allows people to cover their tracks if they acquire a stalker or abusive ex.

Just my two cents.

I agree. I changed my name quite a while ago - not for security reasons but for personal reasons and I *really, really wish* that the URL had changed. I really hope that this is a change that can be made by the tech guru's.

I'll ask our tech guy to pop in here - but ToyGeek is spot on as far as I know

We think that the URLs should never be changed because it is just a locator for content, not much visible on the page. However, if you feel that you need to change it, please submit a support ticket with your request and reason and it will be changed manually in a few days.

Thanks for the response, Neuron Geek!

I too noticed this a VERY long time ago, actually, and I'm glad that you brought it up!

I think I've also noticed it when someone who has changed their name sends you a private message. The original name still shows up.
