Blind and Unbiased Polling

Contributor: Stinkytofu10 Stinkytofu10
I've noticed that the polling on the forums is not blind polling. What I mean is that people can view the results of a poll before submitting their vote. This would influence and bias their own views and opinions on the matter, especially if they were uncertain or undecided to begin with. I've noticed many times where a certain choice would get a vast majority of votes whereas other choices only get a few, or none at all, even on trivial polls such as "what flavor do you like best," etc. Although biased results to trivial polls are not as serious as more sensitive subjects, people asking important questions rely on polls to help make decisions in their lives, and expect voters to be honest and unbiased.

This is theoretically a simple fix, and in reality I hope it is equally simple. Every poll should require the reader to vote before viewing the results. Many online forums use this method, and I think it's not only helpful but necessary that EF uses it as well. This will prevent pre-bias polling and ensure more honesty and accuracy in the polls.

If EF admins are reading this, feel free to PM me and I would love to hear your input on this, or any progress regarding this suggestion.

Thank you.

I've never really thought about this, but after reading what you wrote, I think I agree with you. For silly, fun polls, it really is not that big of a deal, but for more important questions, it is.

Then again, if someone was going to make a life-altering decision, I'd hope they'd do a bit more research than just a poll on EF.

I think that's a good idea, though I hadn't even noticed you could view results before voting.

Maybe a "forfeit vote" option for those who want to see the results without voting ?
