So I just checked the tracking for my latest order and it's now in Maumee, Ohio, which as I learned by Googling is a suburb of Toledo. I live in Columbus...why in the world would the package have to go north of me when it's coming from GA? :-/

There are general shipping routes that locally shipped items intersect with. I am sure these are all based on higher volume shipping areas like major cities.

Sometimes it depends on where the processing and distribution centers are. The post office recently built a huge distribution center in a small town 20 miles north of me. It is close to both the airport and major highways, so most everything goes there before it gets to me.

I've had packages say they were already delivered even though the post office they are at is in the next town. They hit there first THEN they come to mine.

The USPS uses hubs to get mail around. There isn't much in Maumee now anyway, now that they quit making Twinkies and Wonderbread.

Depending on the way I get shipping some of my packages pass right by me and go ALL the way south of me then come back up. Other times they come from the north right to me

It used to drive me crazy when I lived in a small town, if I sent something to someone on the other side of town, it first went 70 miles to another city and then back to our town!

It all depends on what is cost effective for the USPS...does not have to make sense as long as you get your package in a timely manner.
