The True Meaning of Separation of Church and State This Forbes articles written by Bill Flax (Forbes.com contributor) explains where the concept came from and how it was used by the man who wrote it, Thomas Jefferson. The article is three pages long, but the short of the long here is that this phrase means the government shall have no bearing, nor place limitations, on the church. That's it, according to Bill Flax.

Do religious representatives have the right to champion legal restrictions preventing same-sex couples to marry? Does the government have any cause to listen to those who are against same-sex marriages?

Given that the church lobbies, tries to push laws in their interest, and has millions upon millions of dollars, they should be taxed and treated like other businesses/groups who want to push their views.

I think the current definition of marriage is not only unrealistic and over-idealized and elitist, it's far too influenced by religion and faith. The whole system needs a major overhaul. The separation of church and state is written in such a way that it protects the church(es) from the state but not the state from the church(es), which also needs a major overhaul because, when "the church" (or A church) affects the state, it affects the rights of others who don't agree with the church that has influenced the law, which violates the right of those individuals to hold different beliefs and faith since there is now a law in place that contradicts their religious beliefs. It results in the religious beliefs of one party being forced on a nation which, while it may be in keeping with the letter of the amendment calling for separation, it is not in the spirit of it.

I fully support the rights for everyone! Please, keep church out of state! It doesn't belong there!

What you believe in should never effect the personal rights of others. We are entilted to love, life and health.

It is pretty crazy that in 2012... we are still so tied down by the government. Anyone should have the right to marry, the government shouldn't be able to tell us who we can and cannot marry. The church, however, started marriage in the first place and are against gay marriage..

Its all too black and white with not enough gray.

meh I don't feel that marriage is a "requirement" for a successful long term relationship. Plenty of couples can be successful and committed without all the paperwork but by the same token, everyone should have the right to get all that paperwork if they should so choose
