I think as of right now, since Amazon makes and distributes the kindle (although there are now 2 other authorized sellers), they are the only ones that sell or distribute kindle materials. It's part of the marketing because once you have the device you HAVE to buy books through them.

Kindle is an incredibly proprietary eReader, it can only read unprotected Mobibooks, text files, topaz, PDF (in later versions) and Amazon's own AZW. It does not support the standard Ebook format.
It is possible that, in the future, Eden would offer digital downloads, but they would most likely be unable to be imported directly into a Kindle without conversion at the least.

This is not entirely true - you can get versions of books in PDF and still read them on the Kindle, and if you have the proper program (which you can get for free) you can change the file to one that is compatible with the Kindle.

EDIT: Next time I should read the rest of the posts before I say anything - Delicious has said the same thing, though in a negative fashion. I personally find it quite easy to convert e-books, so I don't really mind.
