I'm pretty sure they're just getting rid of the old version with the super flimsy base. I highly recommend getting the newer version (which still has a really small base, just a bit thicker).

Ghalik has it exactly right. It's a design change, not a discontinued item. As far as I know, nothing in the current catalog is set to be discontinued, although I still have a couple of "limited edition" items on the website that aren't actually in production. (Odd colors, etc.)
