So, a couple of the people I'm following on this site have this little ribbon image next to their screen name: And they have a number inside them. Could someone please tell me what it means? Thanks!
It's how many students the person has had. If the contributor is in the mentor program, that will display next to their name letting you know how many students the mentor has had. I do believe it includes active as well as past students.

Ah. Very cool! I've been interested in the mentor program for a while... but I'm not certain about it. I don't know how good a student I would be, given my study habits, but I don't know if I'm good enough to be a mentor, or even if I could skip the student stage first. Hmmm...

Think of a Mentor as a second set of eye's. They will help you polish your reviews and look for things you may have missed, or stuff that will be useful to the reader. They also edit it for grammar and what not.
If you would like to be a student, just ask one of the mentors you like and see if they will have you. Most will be happy to help you out.

What Dwtim said, and also, you have to be at a 6.0 to apply for the mentor program. Just FYI, not to dash your hopes. Keep working on your reviews and maybe take a class. It won't take long for your rank to go up!
