#ExpressLove - Spread the Joy!

Contributor: Ansley Ansley

There have been a number of studies done on happiness and joy and how it affects those around us and ourselves. Smiling is said to be good for the heart muscles as it lowers cortisol levels and ups our doses of endorphines and dopamine. And laughter is just downright good for the soul.

It seems like everywhere you turn today---the television news casts, the internet, printed news media---all they have to show us are stories of strife, heartache and financial destitution in the heart of America and elsewhere across the globe. While these things cannot be ignored, we can pepper them with silver linings and positive actions.

So I present to you a challenge, fellow Edenites! Everyday for the next week, I ask that you go out of your way for people you don't know and those you know and love well.

Maybe it's a smile to a stranger on the subway or a compassionate look and nod as you hold open the door for a mother juggling her kids and their stuff in a crowded store. Maybe it's something as simple as not picking the battle with your lover, even though you know you would win with your logic and stubbornness.

Then, come back here and tell us how you spread the joy! Or if you already do these things, tell us a significant story where your act of kindness completely changed someone's day! I look forward to hearing about your experiences and sharing my own! Your responses will be added to the Facebook feed for Edenfantasys!

And don't forget to head over to EdenCafe to check out the prizes for this weeks give away! First prize is a Mio and ID Moments lubricant. Second prize is a $50 gift card and third prize is a $25 gift card to Edenfantasys. Good luck, everyone!

I spread the joy by trying to make someone laugh everyday. Laughing makes me feel better and if I can get a good laugh from at least one person, it worked.

I'm a nurse and I work in an ICU. Most of my patients or their family are really upset. I always try to walk in and smile, be reassuring and kind. It's hard sometimes but I remind myself that if it were me in their shoes I would be just as worked up. I try to always offer family coffee and a hug if they need it, anything to let them know that they are not alone.

And when my patients are leaving my care I always tell them with a big smile. good bye and I hope you never see me again They always smile and laugh at that

I helped an older gentleman who said that he was new in town... he didn't understand the bus schedules, and he wasn't familiar with where he lived yet. He only knew the address. I looked up a map for him on my phone, and sketched it onto some paper while I looked up the correct busses for him to take. By the time that my bus got to the stop, 15 minutes later, I had already given him a map, a list of bus times and bus numbers, and a set of instructions. I also asked the bus driver of the first bus that he got onto to let him off at a certain stop so that he wouldn't go too far and miss his connecting bus.

I gave a girl in my class a ride to her apartment, even though I walk to class. We walked the short distance back to my apartment so I could get my car and I gave her a ride even though it was somewhat out of my way.

I helped to brainstorm places that my friend can apply to work over the summer, and I helped her to work through some common interview questions.

I spread the joy by talking to people. They tell me that I bring sunshine into their life or that they feel much better from talking to me. I try to talk to a friend of mine from Germany. He was having a hard day Sunday, because it would have been his dad's 65 birthday. His father passed away 14 years ago

So, today I took some old hand puppets to St. David's Hospital, Children's Wing and I did some sing alongs with some kids. They were pretty excited. It made me feel good, cause I'm jobless and stressing alot but I love to sing and singing with some of these kids that are fatally ill and don't have a lot, was so moving cause they had such high spirits and so much love. I'm scheduled to go again Friday.

On Sunday at my job we had to dress as rabbits for an Easter party, on my break a little girl was not unconvinced that I was not in fact said Easter Bunny much to her mothers not wanting to bother me. But I brought a little smile to the girls face when I confirmed that while I was not The Easter Bunny I was one of his helpers who hid the eggs. It put such a smile on her face and left one on mine when I went back to work.

Generosity in attention - letting the other person tell their story or joke, even if you've heard it before. Actually listening instead of jumping in at the first pause so you can be the talker.

I spread joy by just being myself. Offer a helping hand, giving a smile or just being there for someone who needs it.

I really hate my neighbor, but I didn't yell at him on Saturday when he came over to talk about us going to church with him (like my husband does).

I don't have much in common with my dad, but we both really love Harry Potter. I asked him today if he wants to watch all the movies with me again.

Does it count if it's not a person that you bring joy to? My mother is older and she has an old dog that doesn't get out much and I took her for a walk this week.

One day I was at the doctors office with my husband and my 10 month old daughter when I had to use the bathroom. I excused myself and began to make my way over to the restroom. As I was about to enter the bathroom I noticed a handicapped woman in her electric scooter from afar. She had a sad look in her big dark eyes that gave me goosebumps. A nurse was speaking to her rudely as if she were a child and was not smart enough to comprehend simple directions given to her. She was basically yelling at her to bring the proper paper work next time for her appointment. I finally entered the bathroom and minutes passed by as I finished up and cleaned my hands. I then opened the door to leave when I noticed the same woman in her electric scooter making her way down to my direction so I instantly opened the restroom door wide open for her to let her through. I consider myself a very kind and compassionate person so I knew I had to help this woman in need even if I didn't know her personally. She smiled at me as she entered the bathroom and whispered, "thank you". I nodded my head with a smile and as I was just about to leave something told me not to. So I turned back around and watched as she struggled into the stall, she continued to back in and out with her scooter as she held the door open, trying to fit her scooter inside of the stall. She had a look of embarrassment on her face. I then asked her if she needed help but before she could answer I ran over and pushed the door open and waited as she got herself situated inside. I leaned against the cold bathroom wall and waited for her. I knew she still needed help getting out of the bathroom so I couldn't leave yet. She was surprised to see me still standing there when she opened the stall door. I walked over and held the door open as she came out. She leaned up to wash her frail hands and then proceeded towards the restroom door to leave. I stood there and opened it for her. She smiled widely and once again whispered, "thank you". It really warmed my heart to hear her say thank you. I felt like I brought a little joy in her life for just that moment in time. I think love and kindness go a long way. We need to show compassion always for those we know and for those we don't know. You might just bring a bit of happiness to someone you don't know without even knowing it.

And it was such a simple thing to do! How wonderful!

You brought tears to my eyes, I instantly recalled a woman who was in the same nursing home as a relative of mine. She was the meanest, nastiest lady I had ever met in all of my eleven years on the planet. Every weekend that we would visit, I would spend hours delicately painting her finger and toe nails with bright red polish and then we'd play dress up with hats and scarves and sunglasses we had lying around. I think I was the only one that was ever nice to her at that place and we have pictures with her. I'll always remember that year of my life. And I hope she remembered it until she was no longer with us.

I play on an online website where many of the things cost real money. Occasionally I like to give away freebies because it doesn't have a major impact on me but it can really brighten someone's day to get something for free which they could not otherwise afford.

Wow that's great. It's the little things in life that mean the most. I'm sure you were the highlight of her week. Some people in life don't get any love or kindness from anyone so when you go out of your way for them and show you care it means a world of difference to them.

I was on my way to renting a movie and a man stopped me and asked me for my help. He told me that his daughter was in an accident and was at the hospital and needed some money for a taxi or a ride to the hospital. i did not have much at the time, i barely made enough money for rent, did not have a car, so i gave him all i had in my wallet to help this man out, i ended up given him 25$ for a taxi which was enough to get him there.
