I know that Cal Exotics uses PU Cote finishes on a lot of their products. I can't seem to find a lot of information about its safety, however, except that it is phthalate-free. Can you tell me if PU Cote is porous or non-porous?

Thanks so much!

Hi Arabella!

I'm not speaking for Cal. Exot. here, but my understanding of PU Cote toys in general is that they could be considered semi-porous, but only to an extent. It's just a very thin coating of Polyurethane over hard plastic to give it a velvety feel, which under a major magnifier could look very slightly textured (depending on the thickness of the coat that's applied), like sandpaper. Horrible comparison, I know, but it's the best way to explain it. If you cover your kitchen counter with fine grit sandpaper facing up, is the counter now porous? Not really, but there are still little unseen textures that could harbor bacteria if we didn't wash the toys well.

Again, Cal. Exot. may be doing things differently, but that's how another manufacturer explained it to us. Hope that helps

PU Cote (polyurethane) Man-made polymer in varying degrees of hardness or softness. This Safe and Pure material is best used with water-based or California Exotic Novelties® Universal Adult Toy Lubricant™. There are differnt grades of PU Cote, the type we use, and designate as Safe and Pure is both phthalate free as well as non porous. Used only as a thin layer over ABS plastic, the soft feel completely changes the dynamic of a hard plastic. Always wash well as there my be gradiations in the thickness of the coating where bacteria may grow. Always a wise move to clean well before and after use.

Th PU Cote we spec is non-porous, but as I said, gradiations in the finish may present areas where bacteria can "hide"...be sure to clean thoroughly before and after to avoid any possibility.

I'm new to toys. The one I was curious about was the first time power vibe. So does this mean that it is safe to use without a condom then?

Yes...we have designated this Safe and Pure. If sharing toys, always use a condom or California Exotic Novelties Toy Covers.

I am wondering if it is latex free? I can't seem to find an answer and my package doesn't say one way or another.
