Is Time Warner helping the little guy or obstructing the porn industry's ability to battle theft?

Many involved in the porn industry will tell you piracy and free porn are the biggest threats today, against their livelyhood.

But Time Warner has nearly refused to cough up the names of people using their service for porn piracy.

And some people feel it's their right to grab free porn and corporate fat cats should leave them be...

Whose right?

That's a very tough question, much akin to the one about music piracy. I see both sides and both had legitimate motivations. But I think it boils down to the fact that porn is a luxury item and not at all necessary to life, welfare, or happiness. So no one is 'entitled' to receiving it free.

But people who might "steal" once or twice to see something sexy is barely a blip on the money screen for anyone in the industry. But if a few people are doing it excessively for longer periods of time and sharing it with other potential buyers, then yeah they're killing someone's pay check and it ain't right. Not all the people who suffer are the 'fat cats' at the top of heap. Any of the porn stars just starting out, the lighting crew, the editors in charge of laying the digital background music, to the delivery drivers that transport the set props.

So... It's a tough situation. They're both right. They're both wrong.

Jes and I make part of our living doing amateur shots.. piracy will always be just as big an issue for us as it is for the bigger companies. As far as porn goes, you can find free porn anywhere, and many times it's in the form of an entire site rip available to download as a free torrent file - This is usually months or even years of archived photos and video that would normally have cost quite a bit of money in membership fees over the years to obtain.

You can't stop piracy, I'm a geek and I know this all too well. It's just too easy for people to get their hands on anything they want. HOWEVER, I would rather see my work stolen thousands of times over than to be like many and sit idle while the government works to limit our rights concerning what we can and can't do on the internet. I don't want to preach here but we're letting fear of losing some money year to year take away our rights and liberties on the internet. Soon they will be controlling what types of porn you see. If you think I sound nuts, check out the porn laws in other nations around the world.

The truth is, some people just aren't going to pay for things- and that's the bottom line. The pirates have ALWAYS been one step ahead of those working to stop them.

Other people see piracy as stealing, and as wrong, and will pay for things no matter what because of this core value. Time Warner, myself, and others should appeal to these people, and make our products available to them - and stop wasting time and resources fighting a war we can't win. Fighting this war is like fighting terrorism. Need I say more?
