Ted was suuuuuch a sweetheart in that episode. I am glad though that they had the Marshall plot line to add some comedic relief.

he was lucky he grew up so good and his character had to as well. had he turned out to be a short, round guy it probably wouldn't have worked as well. Also, have you seen Nevile's birthday? link

Both him and the guy who played Chunk in 'The Goonies' - those guys turning into adults was amazing!
