When I write something of context I simply can't stay focused if the room is completely quiet. So anytime I write I now either have the television on or have music playing. Does anyone else have a weird quirk that they require in order to write productively?
When you are writing what type of environment do you prefer?

Not really a weird quirk, but I can't have other people around. Not the same room, sometimes not even on the same floor of the house.

I need to be alone, I cant write when things get loud.

I need to be alone, but I usually play instrumental music. I can't do anything with words in it because the words in the music distract me from what I am writing.

I need to sit down and write when the words are flowing...if I wait I lose my focus.

The room needs to be pretty quiet for me or I get distracted.

I have to agree. It needs to be quiet for heavy thought. I do like to hear classical when I am at the office. When I am at home thou I like to hear dance & some techno. Gets the blood pumping. not heavy stuff. Hope that helps you.

I want to be alone when writing and I also want energetic music playing.

I also need an upbeat energetic soundtrack/background music to write.
I use Pandora on the station 'Alternative Endurance Training Radio'
but if that gets to distracting I'll put on some music by the following bands, Fun., Phoenix, My morning jacket, or just some random indie band.
Also like ambient noise and relaxation music but it does tend to make me sleepy lol.

I need it to be peaceful and quiet. A fan on in the background maybe, or the hum of the computer. I have a very hard time writing with other people in the room, or coming in and out of the room, because once I get into the "zone" I don't want to be taken out of it, and I CANNOT concentrate if I think someone is looking at what I'm typing up.

I have to have people around me and headphones in blaring some sort of angsty rock. Otherwise I lose focus and cannot write at all. I suppose that can be considered a weird quirk.

I need to be sure people aren't reading over my shoulder...it bugs the crap outta me. Other than that I can write pretty much anywhere.

I like it mostly quiet, maybe with some 'white noise' (like a fan). When the weather's warm, I enjoy sitting out and hearing nature sounds, like the wind in the trees, the chirping of birds (etc). Anything more, and I don't write as well.
