Antiquated Love
There is nothing worth more then time, common sayings through out history have made reference to this precious commodity. "Time is money.", "There's nothing worth more then spending time with your family.", "Wine tastes better over time.", "Age and wisdom come with time." are just a few. Time can not be renewed, reversed, or altered, it simply exists. So if it is the greatest resource human kind has, it is the greatest gift that can be given to your self or to others. My Grandma has given me her time in the form of spending nights with her, lessons she taught, help she's given and the most physical of all her embroidery.
As a child I have followed my Grandma around watching her work and take care of others. I have rarely ever seen her do anything for her self alone. Even though she is talented in Arts and crafts, she will not take the time to enjoy them if there is anything else that needs to be done. So my Aunt treasures the paintings she has from my Grandma and most of my family treasures her wonderful sewing. There are many shops and on line sales that list embroidery products as old antiques and while I agree with the high prices I do not agree with them being old hard to find works. These are defiantly heirloom quality pieces that should be kept safe, how ever I am grateful that they are still being made daily.
A very versatile craft, the creators draw designs and often iron them onto fabric and place them into sewing hoops. Threads are collected and then selected for sewing. There are many different stitches and each have different affects. This is very time consuming for all of their love and care are put into their work. It takes months to accomplish something that a programed sewing machine can do in hours. How ever the difference between hand sewed and machine is profound. Machines have even stichess and a flat design. While hand sewn shows textures that no machine can ever duplicate. The unique personality of this craft is what leads to such reverence from collectors and a high price for service orders.
I am very lucky to have received a large quilt with many embroidery panels of ballroom ladies from my Grandma. I even got to help her with the drawing draft and then with flower suggestions for months. Little did I know that the blanket she was making would end up as my birthday present over a year later. As her granddaughter I was highly blessed by this gift, for her own daughters, my Aunt and Mom wanted it. She has made others since then but I was the first and I regularly get pillow cases, aprons and other works from my Grandma. So much time went into everything she did and I will always have these frozen piece of her love to remember her by.
Think of how you spend your time and what you have bought with it. How others you care about receive it and give back their own time. There are so many ways, and different ways to show your appreciation. I Hope that time and effort will always be valued highly and wish for you and others to find a little piece of frozen time to cherish.
