I agree, july is ruby which is a red, and you could take a picture of a campfire since its summer or a bright red flower

The overall theme is simply to make it easier to come up with the monthly themes. Unfortunately, given the time constraints for making this calendar, it's really hard to make things that have something to do with each month. For example, when I ... more
When I think of January, I think of new beginnings, babies, starting over. With February, I think of romance.

And being in the midst of a drought, when I think of April, I immediately think of April showers.

Moving forward (the kids are on my back about not having dinner for them yet)

Good! Those are some very good ideas. I think we can do good things with birthstones if that ultimately is what is chosen. Now, let’s look at the origins of the month names.

January: Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways.
February: Februa is the Roman festival of purification, held on February fifteenth.
March: Mars is the Roman god of war.
April: Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love and beauty.
May: Maia (meaning "the great one") is the Italic goddess of spring
June: Juno he is the goddess of marriage and the well-being of women.
July: Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar (hence the Julian calendar) in 46 BC. In the process, he renamed this month after himself.
August: Augustus Caesar clarified and completed the calendar reform of Julius Caesar. In the process, he also renamed this month after himself.
September: The seventh month
October : The eighth month
November: The nineth month
December: The tenth month

If you are trying to figure out how September through December are named after the numbers 7 through 10 when on our calendar they are months 9-12, remember that the calendar as we know it today is not like it once was. There have been a number of calendar reorganizations in the past, and September through December were indeed once months 7-10.

Much like the meanings behind the birthstones, there could be some interesting takes on these origins. July through December would be more difficult, though. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts.

Personally, I was thinking a hybrid approach, with the concepts the stones are supposed to signify being the main theme, but, if possible, to incorporate the color of the stone into the photo as well.
I think you definitely want to have some overall cohesion to the calendar. It doesn't have to be super obvious, but without one, it's simply a collection of random pictures.

Maybe something with numbers in them for the numbered months?

Or objects in groups of 7-10. That still leaves July and August - August especially.

I don't have a problem with random pictures. As long as the picture has something to do with the month it is representing.

Would that confuse people? To have a picture of 10 items in the 12th month?

By the way, I'm not married to any of these ideas. If you have other ideas, spill 'em, and I'll forward them on ahead tho the decision-makers.

The people actually making the decisions *do* want an overall theme, though.

And just for clarification, the images are not necessarily sexual or erotic, correct?

I can think of a few ideas for the first few months, still trying to think of an idea for the last few months. Kindred has a good point about 10 things in the 12th month.

I had contemplated the idea of groups of objects signifying the number the month is, but that wasn't received as well. We could certainly work it in toany of the monthly themes, though.

No. Actually, i think a calendar that is sex-themed would be a bit of a detractor since far fewer people would be willing to hang said calendar on their wall where everyone could see it.

LOL! Sextoys (and birthstones) of the month. January could be a garnet colored sextoy, February an amethyst colored one, etc...

OK, after going through the possibilities for birthstones and month name origins, what do you prefer for the subject of the calendar. This “vote” is non-binding, but I can’t help but think your opinion will go a long way towards the ultimate selection.

I agree, I can't exactly gift a sexy calendar to family and friends.

It doesn't exactly fit your theme of month name origins, but what about a famous line from a poem about that month? Then the image captures the essence of that line. For example, October by Frost.

I think the birthstones/colors is probably the best and most creative option

I like birthstone colors. It opens it up to being themed while still allowing a nice selection of pictures.
