Photo critiquing [Article]

Contributor: Vaccinium Vaccinium
With the first Eden Photographers meeting in the bag, and this month's theme announced ("red"), it's now time to move on to the next step - photo critiquing. Rather than than going into great detail about it last night at the meeting, I instead wrote up an article on the critiquing process that we will be using. Please read the article at the link I just posted, and decide whether photo critiquing is for you. If it is, use what you've learned (or already knew) about using aperture, shutter speed, and ISO to gain the best exposure possible on whatever screams out "red" to you.

As always, past articles and current announcements can be found at the Clubs and Events Blog and discussion on all things photography can be found at the Eden Photographers subforum. If you have any questions about the article or on photo critiquing in general, feel free to post them in this thread.

We have our first submissions for critiquing!

Sam (aka Jul!a) has posted two photos she took, so if you are going to participate in photo critiquing, read the critiquing article I linked above and then head over to the Eden Photographers tumblr site and let Sam know what you like about her photos and what you feel could be improved upon. Remember, constructive criticism is the goal here.

Remember, there are three weeks left to submit your photos with the theme "red", so get busy with it. Something else that should be noted is that for some reason Google Chrome is apparently not working well with tumblr in terms of uploading photos. As such, IE or Firefox is going to be your best bet.

And now Victoria has submitted two photos -and like Sam's, both are must-sees.

Two more people have submitted photos: Alys and CarrieAnn.

Remember, tumblr helps the person being critiqued become a better photographer, but it does the same thing for the person doing the critiquing, so get over there and critique these photos.

If you are so inclined, you can log in to tumblr using your Twitter, Facebook, Google, or Yahoo account to make things easier. You can log in by clicking on those words to the top right of the comment screen.

Just about a week left for this month's photo critiquing. If you haven't submitted photos, it's still not too late. Also, remember that critiquing photos will help you become a better photographer every bit as much as having them critiqued. So even if you have submitted photos, please get over to the Eden Photographers tumblr site and critique the photos that are there.

Since Alys and Carrie Ann submitted their photos, Kindred and I have each submitted a photo, so go check them out.

Is critiquing still going on? And is it terribly necessary to conform to the theme? I just took a few pictures, and despite not having a very nice camera, I would love to hear constructive criticism and the thoughts of others regarding composition.

Is the theme still 'red,' or have we moved on?

We've actually moved on from the theme of "red." This month the theme is "Rule of Thirds." Actually, considering the Rule of Thirds is all about composition, it shouldn't be too hard to conform to the theme and get the constructive criticism you seek.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
