If you don't have one around you'll need to prop it up on whatever is available. In the case of boudoir photography, a pillow on top of a dresser, short ladder, or other piece of furniture that is high enough will allow you to position the camera the way you want. Also, on long exposures, I'd suggest using a remote shutter release of the camera's timer so you don't shake or move the camera when you press the button to take the photo.

OK, time for critiquing!

The rules are simple. Everyone who wants to participate should now post one of their photos to be critiqued. Then, by replying to a specific image, everyone should post at least one positive about the image and at least one negative.

If you have any questions about any of this, now is the time to ask.

For indoor candle light photos I used a small book shelf to put my camera on. It was small enough to move around the room and tall enough to have the camera at my desired height. I found a good tripod for less then 20.00 on ebay. But I have a hard time managing it and the camera for my nature photos. I usually just use a rock or something.

You might want to make yourself a small beanbag. They work much better than rocks because you can get the camera positioned far easier. Plus, you can stuff it with something like sunflower seeds so that if you ever get lost in the forest, you at least have something to eat.

are we allowed to post any type of photos? I have some nature shots. No adult shots.

I'm sure I've posted this photo at one time or another. It's actually one of the photos I've had published in a magazine:

Yep! (You'll notice mine isn't very 'adult' either, unless you reckon that kids don't like dark chocolate)

Any shot is good. I'm a nature photographer, so that's about all I post

But seriously, I think that maybe a little less negative space in the lower left. Otherwise that's about all I can think of.

I both like and dislike this one. At first, it all seems to be just a touch too soft for my liking, but the branches on the trees are relatively crisp upon closer inspection. This is one that I think would grow on me.

The timing and lighting of this are so perfect you could easily convince me you'd stayed up all night to catch it.

The only thing I can say isn;t perfect is that the conifers (tamarack?) in the foreground look a little 2-dimensional, but I suppose that was necessary to get the focus on the waterfall?

I like the line of chocolates that draw you across the frame of the image. I would have liked to see a smaller f-stop and tighter focus on the chocolate in the center (thus moving it to the lower right corner) to make that the focal point with the other chocolates fading off into the distance. It would have also made the background fade out so you could focus purely on the chocolates.

It's definitely soft and needs some sharpening. I tweaked it when I sent it to the magazine. This is the untweaked photo.

So more rows of chocolate, and mailing them to IL, would have solved it?

They are western red cedars, actually

You're right about it being two-dimensional. That's a negative about shooting in overcast conditions, because you don't get the contrasty shadows that trick the mind into seeing the 2-dimensional image as a 3-dimensional one.

hard to find something to say negative wise. For one, the shading seems a little weird to me. The shadows under the chocolate look strange in color like you may have used the burn tool in photoshop? seems very grey.

Other than that I would blurr the background more, and theres to much white space in the bottom left hand corner. I would have moved the chocolates towards the camera more..

I love the light in this though, you can clearly see everything. And it looks like a nice quality photo!
