I'd like a double cheeseburger, super sized fries and a diet coke! How many of you do this? (private polling!)

Contributor: Peggi Peggi
So, we've all heard the jokes about ordering at a fast food joint, getting double everything and adding a diet coke in the mix to make ourselves feel better about our order. Some people do this, sometimes myself included!

So when you order unhealthy food, do you tend to add something (a soda, a fruit or salad, etc) to make you feel a little healthier about your meal?

I usually order a small size burger; share a large sized fries with my husband; either sip a little Coke from his cup or ask for a cup of water.

I always order a diet soda no matter if the meal is healthy or not, but that's just because I only like diet soda. It's not to make myself feel better about eating 5000 calories in one sitting or anything.

Sometimes I do this, but I am also diabetic, and even though I know that the rest of the food isn't good for me, I figure that if I try and keep as little sugar out of the meal as possible, it will be healthier for me.

We only eat fast food maybe once or twice a month. I will sometimes get some fruit on the side or only a fruit salad, depending on what I want to eat. Usually I just get a smaller cheeseburger and fries. I always get a diet coke because I like the flavor more than regular coke.

Sharing is a great way to keep it small and still enjoy it! Often, my hubby will order a large onion rings and I'll share those with him

A lot of sodas taste better in diet, in my opinion! To keep portions down I'll often order from the kid's menu, and then I'll sometimes get the diet soda with it if they have one I like

I rarely eat at fast food restaurants. I HATE diet pop. It's disgusting, IMO. Also, imitation sweeteners cause migraines, body aches, may interrupt the proper manufacture of insulin, causing you to make too much (even more than sugar does) and can cause extra hunger and desire for food, as your "sweet tooth" wasn't really satisfied and your body craves REAL sweet foods.

The body knows you have eaten a sweet food because your blood sugar goes up slightly, and you feel fuller. Most fake sweeteners do NOT immediately cause the satisfying blood sugar regulation, leaving your body STILL in demand for something really sweet. (Although these sweeteners may still cause the same rise in insulin in many people that sugar does.) The regular intake of imitation sweeteners is a vicious cycle, and you are actually better off with sugar or, even *gasp* corm syrup!

There is NOTHING "healthy" about diet pop. It's probably one of the most problematic foods, aside from dairy products that Americans seem to think are "good for them."

On the rare occasion I do go to a fast food restaurant, I usually order a small burger and a small fries from the dollar menu, and then either get an unsweetened iced tea or a bottle of water. I almost never drink pop of any kind.

I agree, and also heard that because of the issue with diet sodas not regulating your blood sugar properly, it's worse than regular soda for an actual diet, because it makes you feel more hungry. I have hypoglycemia so I only drink it for the flavor, but if I am in a pinch and don't have my glucose tablets with me, I have to drink regular soda!

When I go out to eat it's a free for all. Double or triple cheese burger, extra large fries and a super big Dr. Pepper.

I don't eat supersized food at all...and I realized that I don't like fast food as much anymore. The last few times I have eaten at McDonalds, I felt sick afterward.

I hate diet soda - tastes nasty to me. Unsweetened tea. (Yes, I am the Anti-Christ of the South, no less.)

It's pretty rare for me to go for fast food. The closest that I get to it is Chinese (no MSG) or Sicilian pizza. I'd rather grill burgers at home.

I was just about to go on a diet soda rant, myself. My mum went on diet soda and has gained at least 50 lbs over the 10 years since because she just eats sweeter snacks, and more of them.

Go you for beating me to the punch.

You're welcome. Because it doesn't actually raise your blood sugar at all, and your body expects a "reward" with sweet tasting foods, when that "reward" (the slight blood sugar rise) doesn't happen, your body continues to crave REAL sweet, sugary foods. Then you gain MORE weight.

Fifty pounds in 10 years while drinking diet pop is probably on the low end of what this stuff does to you. I'm willing to bet that she doesn't want to admit that "diet" pops are causing the problem. She's better off with small quantities of real pop with sugar or corn syrup, but you know that. I know SO many people who don't realize this, drink this stuff and then wonder why their health continues to decline. It's really awful stuff.

I have a neighbor who lets her 3 year old drink it because she doesn't want him to "have a lot of sugar." When I offer him water at my house, she insists on adding juice to it, because he's gotten to the point (AT THREE) where he won't drink anything that doesn't taste sweet. They are setting this baby up for a lifetime of trouble with overweight. Sad. What would be so awful about just giving him water?

I absolutely hate diet pop! It tastes nasty. I don't get fast food that often, but if I do, I either just get a burger from the dollar menu and that's it (and get a drink at home) or maybe I'll get a kid's meal if I want some fries or apples. Though usually, if I'm getting fast food, I have my cousin's three year old with me and she gets a chicken nugget happy meal (with milk) and she shares all her stuff as along as I give her bites of burger.

As for the pop/soda... I will drink regular because I hate diet. I do not like the taste of fake sugar at all... I can instantly tell if it's in anything because it is way too sweet and artifical tasting. My mother is Type 2 diabetic and she drinks diet gingerale ALL THE TIME. Trying to tell her that studies show that people who drink diet soda gain more weight and have larger waistlines is like talking to a door. She thinks she knows everything and says that isn't true. *Sigh*

I really don't like drinking my calories. I go with diet because I'm used to it by now, with the exception of the forever-gross Diet Coke, and because it helps me keep my calorie splurges in check.

The sugar in regular sodas now give me tummy aches if I'm not careful to eat something else.
