Health Issues Support

Contributor: BBW Talks Toys BBW Talks Toys
There is so much more to a healthy lifestyle than simply eating healthy and exercising. Some of us have vices and conditions that limit our abilities to be healthier, such as smoking or depression. While healthy nutrition and exercise helps most problems, sometimes we need support to get resolution for these.

I want this to be a safe and positive place where people looking to get help with any health issues can gain support, advice, and friends to help them along the way.

VERY IMPORTANT:Thi s thread is not a substitute for seeking professional help. All the advice and tips offered here are opinions of contributors who may or may not be medical professionals. Please, seek your healthcare provider’s advice before trying any suggestion given here. Please be responsible.

Maybe we need a sub-forum for this! There are so many different problems out there. I guess I'll start...I have ankylosing spondilitis and major depressive disorder.

I understand MDD, but could you explain both of these a little for those of us who don't know anything about it? And ankylosing spondilitis, I admit, I've never heard of.

Do you have any preferred resources you recommend when educating others?

Anyone else here have either of these?

Major Depressive Disorder is basically severe depression, marked by episodes of apathy, sadness, loss of motivation, and problems with eating and sleeping that can last from a few weeks to a few years.

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a stiffness in the joints that develops in early adulthood and worsens over time. It can actually cause joints to freeze together.

As for me, I suffer from PTSD and ADD (like real bad). I find that Fish Oil helps with the ADD and St. John's Wort helps with my mood and anxiety that are associated with depression and PTSD. I was on prescription drugs for a long while. I find myself feeling more normal and capable of feeling that "natural range of human emotions"-thing now that I'm on natural remedies for them

Fish oil, really? I've never heard of that for ADD before. Do you have a specific brand/type/whatever that you recommend? I gave up on ADD medications years ago because I didn't like me on them. Although there wasn't much of a change really. Me on the medication = sometimes able to pay attention better, relatively high strung, and not eating much. Me off the medication = short attention span unless I can hyperfocus on things, less high strung and more laid back, and eating more. The only real emotions I can seem to categorize are anxiety, and lack of anxiety, although for me, I've never really known anything else, so I can work with that, although it's landed me some accusations of being pretty heartless at times, since some things just don't seem to phase me.

It's not specifically for concentration but it's been proven in children and they're studying it in adults. Omega 3s are good for brain health as well as heart health

Thank you for that. I'll definitely be trying to remember to grab some the next time I'm at the store.

I have more mental health issues than anything else, unfortunately. My official diagnoses are Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder and PTSD. I've been in treatment for them on and off for 11 years now. The last few years have been really rough but I'm finally on the right cocktail of meds and in a much better place. I get to a level of being non-functional without meds. So, as much as I hate taking them, they're part of my life. I don't mind them as much since they're actually helping, for once.

*waits for everyone to run away, screaming* Haha.

I've tried the fish oil for my depression and it wasn't helpful, but I think that depression has a wide range of causes. I think everyone should definitely give it a try. If it works, it's a lot cheaper and less risky than the more traditional pharmaceutical treatments!

Really? I have ADD as well as depression, but the fish oil was recommended to me for my depression. Either way, I'm glad it works for you! I wish I could find relief from fish oil rather than my ADD meds. I take dexedrine legally but it still bugs me that I'm addicted to a controlled substance!

This is kind of gross, but are you able to take them without getting a fishy aftertaste. Those fishy burps throughout the day drove me crazy!

I've never had that problem, but they do make some that are odorless, you just have to check the packaging.
