That is a possibility as well.

I'd have to do a little more research to see about the adopt-a-family timeframe as well. Since that's what we were going to be going with again this year if we did it.

as a low income SAHM who uses food stamps and occasionally food banks, teaching is all good and well, but it doesn't fill your kids stomach today.

I know the federal government has a campaign each year for employees to donate to charities. They produce a catalog that lists the % of each contribution that goes towards overhead expenses, etc. That might be a way to help narrow down a charity to support.

There hasn't been as of yet, but we also just started doing these recently. So there's a chance we could do that next year if you guys thought it'd be a good idea.

True. Although there are programs that create inner city vegetable gardens and things like that. I don't know how well they work.

I kinda like how we do it now, because as new issues, causes (like taco o dooms race) or disasters come up we can focus on those

They tend to work fine, but usually they fill up really quickly and a bunch of people get shut out. Plus, there are very few inner city plots of land that are available and/or suitable for it.

Since the meeting is almost over and Vac is holding his Special Meeting directly after this, I want to ask right now if there's anything dire anybody wants to bring up about Eden Gives Back, or if there are any other ideas anybody wants to bring up now.

and they usually require time that many families can't give

This may be asking too much from EF, but any chance EF would offer some sort of incentive for people to donate? Like a discount coupon, etc? I'd love more support from the community.

The better business bureau also lists whether or not a charitable organization allows transparency with its finances and if they do, what percentage of their income is used for actual charitable work. It is updated annually.

It's something that can be brought up. I obviously can't say yes right now, but there's a possibility that we might be able to do something like that.

If it is not too much maybe in the future we take a look at the past giving year, focusing on response, participation, set-up time, etc and use that to help come up with a plan for the next year. It may be a great prep tool, help to create visibility, and enlist more support. And it may help to also prepare those who want to give for the future be in a better position to.

That's important, because there are far too many charities that actually give a fairly small percentage of their proceeds to charity, with the rest of it going to salaries and overhead.

I think that might get more of the community involved who shy away from things like this

I agree, and I think it's a great incentive. There are a few details to be worked out, but I'm definitely going to bring it up and see if we can make something happen.

Yup, I knew a guy once who started a "non-profit" charitable organization. Do you know how much he actually had to donate to charity to maintain his "non-profit" status? Less than 1% of his gross. Just one of the reasons that I am generally highly suspicious of "charities".

Damn, missed the meeting. Sorry guys.

Yay team!!! Great job on the Joplin donations, I am so proud to be a part of it.

Toys for Tots is an awesome idea, I can tell you first hand how much joy a toy can bring a kid when they do not think they will be getting any.

I think it would be great to do both the Thanksgiving/Harvest drives (End of October) and the Toys for Tots for the end of year holidays. Maybe two families for Thanksgiving/Harvest would not drain us to much so we can still donate for the toys.

An idea for an incentive; allow those who donate/participate to go up a notch on their requested product for the month(s). That is, if they can request a $30 toy they could request a $40 one. Of course a coupon would work good too.

I already regret what I'm about to write, and everyone please feel free to pummel me mercilessly for it, but your ideas for an incentive sounds like "Help Toys for Tots by buying Toys for Twats!"

I'm sorry.
