Eden Gives Back: Christmas Cheer Board

Contributor: Misfit Momma Misfit Momma
The Christmas Cheer Board is a local volunteer based charity that was started in 1919, and provides hampers to low income families every Christmas. My own family has received wonderful hampers from them and I owe them many thanks for the meals and gifts they have given us. I'm very happy to be able to give back a hamper to another family thanks to Eden Gives Back and you, the fabulous people that make up the Eden Community!

I had to send in an Oath of Confidentiality, so won't be sharing any names but the family we are bringing a hamper to includes a single mother and two children; a 5 year old boy and a 7 year old girl. I wasn't able to find out a whole lot about them, but I do know that the girl likes dolls, especially barbies, and the boy likes Spiderman and other action figures.

The $100 that I'm receiving for myself, will be used to buy gifts for my own children. (Will be posting more on my personal situation on my own blog this weekend for anyone who was interested)

I'll be posting updates through the month, so keep an eye on this post if you want to follow along!

Donations are being taken until Tuesday, December 13th, and can be sent in by emailing: Sam @ edenfantasys.com with a subject line of Eden Gives Back Christmas donations. Make sure the body of your email includes the code of the gift card you're sending in, along with the amount. Now please, donate your points today!

This is wonderful! Thank you for participating.

One question....what's a hamper? I know it as something you stuff dirty laundry in but I don't think that's quite how it's being used here, correct?

I'm sorry, it didn't even occur to me that hamper might not be a widely used term like this! A hamper is to include basic food/Christmas dinner needs, the Cheer Board has a specific grocery list that they insist on. The food doesn't have to be limited to the prewritten shopping list, it just needs to include those items. Of course, it also includes gifts for everyone in the recipient family.

Once we have received the funds from the donations, we will be doing the shopping, gift wrapping, and delivering the hamper to their home.

I've never heard it be called anything other than a hamper, do you mind if I ask what you call it?

Oh, I see. Kind of like a pantry thing...gotcha.

I think we would call that a basket but given how large it is, hamper really does seem appropriate. Learn something new everyday!

I'm thinking a "basket" might be a more appropriate term if it's a physical item..?

If it's literally a plastic laundry basket -- which would work, then that's more standard usage. To me, a hamper is the lidded, wicker kind only.

hehe. It isn't literally a laundry basket or a lidded hamper. Will be more like a bunch of boxes full of food and presents!

Hmm. Then maybe "care package" is more appropriate. d=

Thank you everyone for your donations!

Did some late night shopping at Walmart last night. Lesson learned: Shopping for someone else is harder than it sounds, especially when it comes to which toys to buy for the kids!

It's handy that there is a list provided for the food, so I brought that with me and picked up almost everything on the list. It's been a long time since I had a cart this full!

Those red boxes you see in the cart, I could not resist. They are freaking MINT chocolate covered cherries.

I still need to buy the turkey and the perishable foods, but we will buy that stuff on the day we deliver the care package. Where I ran into the biggest problem, was the toys. This is what I found when I went to the Barbie isle:

The selection of action figures/Spiderman toys was even smaller! I did grab one Barbie playset, but we decided we would be better off to head to Toys R Us to look for toys for the kiddos. Hope their shelves are better stocked!

Wow, those shelves on the Barbie aisle really are poorly stocked! I hope you had better luck at Toys R Us.

Thanks for doing this!

Did some more shopping today, but didn't get photos this time. Got the rest of the food items (turkey, ham, milk etc.) and a few more gifts for the kids, plus a Walmart giftcard for the Mom.

I still want to pick up a few more gift things tomorrow, and should be wrapping and delivering everything tomorrow evening so will be posting with photos of everything together soon!

Such a busy day today!

I didn't get everything finished yesterday like I had planned to, so my Mom went out shopping late last night to pick up the last few gifts and I headed over to her house today to get everything ready.

My post should be up on the blog tomorrow, but here's a sneak peak for now!

Great job spreading Christmas cheer! It must have taken a while to do all that grocery shopping.
