#EdenGivesBack - Christmas 2012 - I'm Adopting a Family!

Contributor: Kayla Kayla
I'm so excited to let the EdenFantasys community know that I've volunteered to help EdenGivesBack with sponsoring a family during the holidays. The holidays are certainly the worst when it comes to gifts when you have no money. From experience, I know that seeing all the hype, commercials, and excitement while knowing you really can't 'experience' any of it - well, it sucks.

That's why I teamed up with our local women's shelter to adopt a family. Our local women's shelter is a non-profit organization that provides support, housing, items, and general help for any person and family impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault. I've helped the shelter on multiple occasions including volunteering my time, donating my affiliate commissions, and donating food for Thanksgiving and adopting a family for Christmas a couple years ago with the help of the Eden community!

As you can imagine, due to the awful situation that this family has been through, I'm not allowed any personal details nor their location. In fact, I have to sign a waiver to even have access to the drop-off point for the items.

What I do know, though, is some basic details. It's a mother with her three children, and I know that they are in the shelter due to her previous abusive partner. The first child is a 10-year-old female who loves dolls and her mother is requesting hats and gloves as well. The second child is a 9-year-old female who loves Barbies and purses. (Sounds like those two girls get along well!) The third child is a 7-year-old boy who loves Spiderman and cars. Along with that, their mother says they could use candles, bathroom items, and kitchen items to help them get back on their feet. They sound like a really sweet family who just got into a bad situation.

With everything this family has already been through, though, I'm just hoping that I can, with your help, make their holiday a much brighter time - and give them hope for the future.

If you can, please make a donation for the Eden Gives Back drive! The drive ends the morning of December 3rd to make sure we can all get gifts in time! So please help out if you can!

Way to go Kayla! I've already donated some. I'm trying to get more points before I give some more. This is so wonderful. I hope we raise a lot.

It is wonderful that you have chosen to adopt this family. I was in a shelter for a short time and it was a very scary experience. I know this family will never forget your kindness.

Second time in three years. Didn't get to last year for Christmas, but I did for Thanksgiving. I love doing it each year.

ALSO! Totally looking for people's opinions since it's a community-effort!

Both of the girls in this family LOVE Barbie dolls which makes me think they probably play Barbies together like my sister and I did when I was younger. Do you think they'd appreciate smaller, equal-to-each person things like one set of clothes for one girl and one set of clothes for the other girl, or do you think they'd like a large Barbie item they could share like something like one of the large Barbie Dreamhouses?

I'm thinking one Dreamhouse-type-item they could share then getting them smaller toy-like-items for individual use. I know my sister and I were joint-gifted one of those big Barbie houses when I was younger, and we always played together with it. Sure, there were a couple arguments over it, but I don't remember it being too much of a heartache, and I doubt the mother has been able to afford a huge item like a house while the girls probably have some cheaper items like clothes for the dolls.

Opinions?

Does anyone have any opinions about it?

I would say a joint gift when it's something that big is totally appropriate!

Joint gifts are really nice, I did that last year with my two sons and their drive along Jeep. Can't afford two, but they get along just fine sharing the one they have.

Thank you for all that you are doing!

I found what I think I'm definitely going to get them. It's a Barbie Dream House - 3 Story dollhouse. I think it looks like something any Barbie lover would love. (And I want to avoid getting too many cheap items since I think, if their mother had any extra funds, she probably got them some of the cheaper sets when she had the chances).

This is some of the start of this. (Why does EF's platform make me crop this image all stupid-like?) By shopping with sales and coupons, it looks like we're going to get a lot for this family! I'm sure they're going to have an amazing holiday this year!

Going back for more toys tomorrow! Looks like I'll be getting some Barbies, Hot Wheels, candles, and some other kitchen items for the mother!

Wow, Kayla! You're definitely off to an amazing start there. Are you having fun shopping or are the crowds bad this year?

Crowds are pretty tough, but it's still fun. We managed to get all the rest of the items this past week as well. I should be wrapping them up today!

All of them are dropped off as of today! It was easily the largest donation they said they've had this year! I'm sure I'll be writing up a post soon!
