Most of the time, if you look at the very top of the forum - there are a ton of banners telling you what's going on right now. The Innovations is the first banner up.

Hello and welcome to the September meeting of EdenDIY!
Please welcome Katelyn, she approached me with the idea of a DIY flogger that she has made. It took a little while longer to pull all of this together but I am happy we can do it this month.
Today we are going to discuss how to make homemade floggers. Her flogger cost less than ten bucks and is personalized to fit her needs. You can personalize the colors, weight, length and material of your flogger. This makes it super cheap and fun.
Gathering Materials-
The first thing you will need to find is rubber. She lives in a college town so she just walks to the local bike repair store. They give away the used inner tubes from their bicycles, in order to encourage recycling. The rubber you buy does not have to be new and perfect and I think recycling products is eco-friendly and super cheap! The inner tubes, she received, were the standard size fitting 26 X 1.5 inch rims.
“Flagellation in the name of a god is far from being a rare thing. Nearly all of the mother religions, the ancient mystery cults of the great Mediterranean civilizations of Greece, Egypt, Rome and Persia, and even the religions of Islam and Christianity have, at some point in history, incorporated flagellation into their spiritual rites and practices.” link

When she brought the tubes home, she cut them open and sat them in the bathtub. These tubes are used so they will be covered in dirt, grease, and patches. This will all need to be scrubbed off. Use heavy duty cleaner and this process will only take a few minutes.
You can also use the sink if there is enough room.
The next thing you will need to buy is a wooden dowel. I suggest finding one that best fits in your grip. She usually gets dowels less than a foot long and less than ¾ inches in diameter. This will be the handle to your flogger, but as it will be covered in rubber there is no need to buy a fancy wood. Soft wood is preferable because you will need to be able to drive nails into it. At Ace (the local hardware store) she paid less than two dollars for a wooden dowel.
[bold|[color=DarkMagenta|[size=18| “Syrian priest, like countless other religious leaders, believed that the gods could be appeased by the use of scourges and would spend hours whipping themselves profusely with an instrument made of twisted woollen cords armed with small bones. And, even today, Shiite Muslims indulge in the practice of public self-flagellation.” link

Other small items you will need are small nails or a heavy duty stapler. Rubber adhesive glue (contact cement) is also necessary for binding the rubber and wood on the flogger handle. Duct tape is what you will use to wrap both ends of your flogger so you will only need two 4 inch pieces. She suggests using standard black tape unless you can find a great pattern. She has used leopard print, checkered or simple black tape.
09/18/2012
Creating your flogger handle-
You will need to decide how long a handle you want. If you do not have a saw you can cut the dowel to length at most hardware stores such as Home Depot or Lowes. First duct tape both ends, with this flogger she used a fun checkered tape. When wrapping the ends of your flogger, remember that the base of the flogger is most important, it doesn’t matter if the wrapping that you do on the handle looks terrible, this will be covered in rubber.
Wrapping the base of the handle in rubber will require rubber adhesive glue, nails and a hammer. Nail the rubber onto the end of the flogger and coat the rubber and handle with the adhesive. You can then stretch and pull the rubber while twisting the dowel. Wrapping around the base, you will want to practice which wrap looks best to you. I like each of my layers to be about 3/4 of an inch apart. Once you have wrapped up about halfway up the flogger you can stop and nail the rubber in place.
The next step is to pull out a piece of duct tape and lie pieces of rubber, 1/2 inch thick and 2 feet long widthwise onto the piece of tape. She laid out twenty pieces on hers. These will form the flogger’s tails. After these are laid out, you can begin to wrap the tape around the flogger’s base (the part of the base that is not wrapped yet). The tails will start about 3 inches from the end of the base.
[bold|[color=DarkMagenta|[size=18|”Flogging has also been reputed to have a good amount of medicinal value as well. At various times throughout history, it has been promoted as a way of 'stirring up the body's stagnating juices, dissolving the precipitating salts, purifying the coagulating humours of the body, clearing the brain, purging the belly, circulating the blood and bracing the nerves.' It has been used as a treatment for insanity, laziness, depression, obstruction of the bowels and even for lockjaw and choking.” link

Finishing it up-
Finish wrapping your rubber up the handle and around the three inches of flogger tail. At the end of the handle wrap the rubber extra tight around the tails. Nail the rubber down tight.
Once this is finished your flogger will be completely wrapped. You can now trim away any extra rubber. The tails will be extra long and you can now cut them to size. She likes to cut the flogger tails about two feet long, her flogger is huge though and will be the biggest anyone will want to try out. You can cut your tails shorter but don’t go any shorter than 16 inches without trying the flogger out on a chair to feel the snap and feel of your new tool.

If you want to be extra classy-
If this super simple flogger idea works out for you here are some extra ways to make your flogger nicer.
Use leather-
If you want to be eco-friendly and cheap, you can hit up your local thrift store to look for leather jackets or suitcases. She likes doing this because she is a college kid and a little broke.
Another way to make your flogger a lot handier is to attach a wrist strap. The same way you attached the tails unto the flogger, you can attach a loop. This loop can go around your wrist or allow you to hang the flogger on the wall.
”The first overtly pornographic work on the subject of flagellation was published in the year 1718, and was entitled 'A Treatise on the Use of Flogging'. With the appearance of this book, flagellation became a passion throughout Europe, so much so that the French soon dubbed it 'le vice anglais,' the English vice, a nickname which would stick for centuries.” link
