I'm thrilled to be hosting Eden Cooks, helping everyone in this wonderful community learn about something that ties us all together.
So the club is the most fun and useful for all of us---what kind of recipes are you most interested in learning? Do you want quick meals that are quick and easy to prepare for your family? Do you want healthy meals or "traditional" meals? Meals with a history lesson? Ethnic foods? "Special occasion" meals for holiday gatherings? Elegant food for two to impress your date? Stovetop or oven?
We've got a cornucopia of options, and for the first meeting I hosted I just chose the meal I make most frequently---but I'd like to know what you want to learn about!
Of course---this isn't an end-all-be-all poll, because we've got lots of months to look forward to! If results are split 50/50, we'll just have the club focus on an equally on both options, month to month.

Are you interested in meals that can be made double-quick, or do you want to spend some time in the kitchen?

I haven't really participated, but I would love if they did some very simple recipes. I don't know how to cook, so I am not able to follow complicated recipes.

I haven't participated much either but I am a reader more than anything.
I love recipes that are quick and easy but have lots of taste. I have a martha stewart cook book full of these types of recipes and it is the book I refer to for anything new I want to try.
It would be nice to see a recipe done using ginger or a vegetable ppl don't usually buy every week (but that's relative lol)

good home cooked food takes time to make. Slow recipes please.
09/11/2011
I just found the cooking section myself, but simple recipes probably would get more people making them. I like to cook anything I can eat, so either work for me though!
09/18/2011
Simple recipes. Easy to make, small portions.
10/29/2011
I like both quick meals for days when i dont have a lot of time things are crazy and we want to avoid eating out, and slow meals cause i love cooking and dont mind the wait for a truely exceptional meal.
10/30/2011
Both are fine, but I tend to lean toward faster and/or easier recipes whenever possible.
11/15/2011
I'm always on the lookout for easy, quick recipes that I can whip out after a busy day at the office/classroom. I don't want to spend 15 minutes figuring out a recipe, making a special run to the grocery store, and another 30 minutes cooking.
11/19/2011
Some good slow cooker recipes would be nice.
11/19/2011
Quick easy meals so WE can have more time to spend on eden.
01/28/2012
Simple recepies
03/17/2012
Both slow and fast meals. It is good to have options.
03/20/2012
More healthy recipes for fresh veggies. Love vegetables but I feel like I eat the same ones, prepared the same way, over and over.
04/12/2012
Gotta show it to my Baby!
04/12/2012
You should do a mix of quick and semi normal length meals, as well as maybe tradiational meals with healthy alternatives, or just both.

I'm terribly impatient so I'd likely lose interest if the cooking/preparation time takes too long. Though I enjoy baking so anything with quick-ish preparation and a break in between followed by plating/decorating I'm all for.

Good homecooked meals for dinner that are fast or ones that take time. I like recipes that are creative and something different that I would never think of.
I like my recipes with easy ingridents that I can pick up at my local supermarket.

I'm more likely to cook a fast meal, but once and a while I don't mind spending a little more time.
07/14/2012
Slow ones are good. I've been looking for a good chili rellano recipe if anyone wants to share?

Hearty meals, like stews and stuff of that sort.
09/10/2011
I make sure I eat balanced meals, but I don't mind learning about recipes that I only make once a month or whenever because they aren't "healthy" enough to fit my lifestyle. And I'm big on modifying recipes anyway, lol, so teach me the traditional or "right" way, and I'll substitute things to make it right for me
09/10/2011
balanced meals. protein, starch, and veg in every meal.
09/11/2011
Healthy and balanced recipes are always great, but I dont tend to worry as much about it when I cook for myself.
11/15/2011
We try for healthy meals and it's hard to find great, flavorful, healthy meals.

I've really got to focus on cooking healthier. My partner is trying to lose weight and it wouldn't hurt me either to eat right. The healthier the meal, the more likely I'll be to try it.

every day kind of recipes. eating right should be an everyday type of event.
09/11/2011
All of the above!
09/13/2011
Special diet meals! That being said, there are soooo many different special diets! My household is a low-carb household...no bread products or beans (other than soy beans) in here! Lots of meat, cheese, and veggies though!
09/18/2011
Usually I'm just making dinner for myself and whoever happens to be in the house that evening! Weeknight sort of things, you know.
11/15/2011
Oh it just depends on my mood, always to impress my Master, and of course when He asks me to cook something yummmy - though sometimes it stays undone, happens... ^^
12/16/2011
Recipes that transport well are good. In my circle of friends, we'll often do potlucks.
01/28/2012
All of the above.
03/20/2012
I live in a small apartment and am often only cooking for 2 so I need small meals that are also very simple to make seeing as I don't have a full kitchen to spread out in.
04/12/2012
I find I have more issue with making a variety of lighter, cold, lunch type meals.

08/09/2012
Some days I'm not in the mood to cook so I just throw something quick together or even just grab a bowl of cereal for supper. Other nights I'll put on a big feast just for me and partner. I always go all out when I have guests over though. Which is often enough. I'm running out of meals to serve them. I'm always afraid they'll think I always cook the same meal so I try not to repeat dishes for the same guests. It happens though, often they'll ask me to make something I've already made and I do it gladly
Anyway, basically anything from easy weeknight to elegant and extravagant, I'm game!

I love baking, and I cook up a few loaves each week... but I know that's more time than a lot of people want to devote to the oven. I'd love to go into breads (maybe in a separate thread?) if there's interest, though. Also---do you want to learn to make desserts? Or should we keep focusing on main meals? Appetizers?

I'm actually really interested in learning how to mix drinks and brew beer.
09/10/2011
would love to talk about brewing beer.
09/11/2011
I'd be happy to try anything I don't have to go buy specialty equipment for! If someone has a recipe for brewing beer in a pickle jar, I say let's do it! But, if it would require I go spend hundreds of dollars (or even $30) on equipment, I couldn't do it.
09/18/2011
I'd love to try to make some bread, but I'm wondering if I need a bread-machine (like that) for it, because neither I nor my parents have one.
10/17/2011
I would like to cook anything just about. Desserts, entrees, appetizer or beverages are all great. My boyfriend and I are very big foodies So I'd like to try anything delicious with him
I like recipes that have simple ingredients, stuff that I can get at a regular grocery store. Best yet, recipe that utilize things that are normally in the fridge/kitchen already.

It really depends on what I'm looking for, but entrees are usually what I look for first!

Ahhh bakin bread goodies is like creating a lil child of yours, one of the coolest thing in the whole world, you can add poppy seeds, peanuts, popcorn, chips, different grains, you can make it spicy, sweet, glittery, twisted, sticks, buns, meat into it, veggies, ohhh just whatever you wanna include and create, it is like doing magick!!! ~pants with a pounding heart...!
12/16/2011
I really would love to learn all of the categories listed above.

peanut free, for my younger son.
09/11/2011
Low Carbohydrate! I mentioned this in "step 3" as well. Alternative ingredients are always a plus...as are "leave this out if you like/dislike" are helpful too when trying to adjust a recipe to fit our specific dietary needs.

I've been vegetarian for most of my life and he's pretty much there too. He pretty much only has meat on special occasions, visits to friends' houses, or restaurants.

Alternatives for common allergies such as milk, peanuts, eggs or tree nuts.

Low calorie.

Vegan, vegetarian, low calorie.
08/09/2012
Augustxsins
Low calorie, no shellfish (crab, shrimp, lobster, crawfish)

I would be interested in gluten-free maybe to pass on to my step-dad. But otherwise for myself and partner, I'd just like to see healthy stuff.

My husband eats meat, I am lacto-ovo vegetarian, so I love recipes that I can make and then add meat to so that we can eat the same thing, but with or without meat as we choose.
Thank you.

I'm very interested in the club, and I'm good for a mix of things that take time and things that are easy and quick. As long as the recipe is announced far enough beforehand and any long-reaching steps are mentioned (like soaking dried beans or marinating) in the initial post, I'd be up for giving it a try.
What I probably won't participate in is anything that requires frying, or deserts that come from packages or involve corn syrup. I'm also unlikely to try anything that involves building off a canned sauce.
Basically, if it's from scratch, I'll probably follow along. If not, I'll just make my own food.
As far as allergies- I have a food intolerance to alliums, to the point where an eighth of a teaspoon of garlic powder in a pot of stock will make me violently ill. I know it's unlikely, but if there were one or two recipes that I didn't have to modify I'd be in heaven!

The only thing I have ever put corn syrup in is pecan pie or macadamia nut pie... I can't actually imagine a case where I'd prefer to use it, other than nut pies. If enough people want to see dessert recipes, I will probably give the full recipes, and then say "those of you who are pressed for time can use a boxed mix for this"... but I'll probably have to research box mixes first, because I'm sort of clueless about them.
Interesting! I've never heard of an allium intolerance. I worked with a guy once whose religion forbade eating allium, and in recipes where other people would use onions or garlic, he (and other adherents of his religion) would use "asafoetida" aka "hing" (and my mom reports she used to sell it at a pharmacy in the south, phonetically called "ass-FID-i-tee") to replicate the flavor.
I'll see what I can do, thanks for replying

And that's an interesting story. I might have to look into the asafoetida. Had no idea there were religions that forbade eating it.

I would love to learn easy to prepare meals that don't forever to cook. I know how to cook so that's not my issue, but time is. Also, I would like to see some ideas for getting your kids to eat something besides hotdogs all the time.

My final thoughts?
I hate cooking and my husband doesn't have time. Eating out is too expensive and my cooking wear (pots, pans, baking dishes, etc) are limited, and because I hate cooking I don't feel like buying the new stuff to cook with (although if we stopped eating out we could afford to). I would love to learn some FUN quick recipes that would encourage me to get in the kitchen and cook for my husband. I would also like to learn to love cooking (and cleaning, but that's a whole other ball game!)

Generally speaking, I've got plenty of recipes for special events and holiday feasts, otherwise I look to FoodTv.com for these sorts of things. I'm always looking for quick and casual recipes that aren't to time consuming and deliver good food for everyday meals.
