Exactly... why buy something you don't like. Though at the same time I look for things that appeal to a child's taste too because not all candy that I like will most children eat.

Boyfriend and I like to buy candy in bulk year-round, so whatever we have on hand is definitely fresh enough for trick-or-treaters, so we get a big Halloween bowl out for them and give them whatever's on hand!

Partly, I buy what's cheap. But I also buy what I like, because I know I'll have leftovers at the end of the night. And I'd never pass out something that I don't like--Jujubes and Dots are bullshit--and only dads like Almond Joy and Mounds (at least, that's the way it seemed. I like them these days, but when I was a kid, I knew NOBODY my age who liked those candy bars). Whenever I got those in my trick or treat bag, I gave them to my dad.

We always have leftovers, so I only buy candy that someone in the household will eat.
I'll buy even more just after Halloween when the stores mark it way down.

I buy things I like AND the cheap kind little kids will like. I hand out the simple cheap candy (like dumdums and twislers) to the toddlers and babies, and then give gummies and bubble gum to the older kids. Usually, I get Jolly Ranchers, Bubble Gum, Dumdums, Fruit Chews, and chocolate bars. Usually the chocolate bars are last resort and for me to eat.

Other: I live on a hill behind trees and other houses and in the 12 years I've lived here the only kids to come by were the neighbor bringing her grandkids, so we keep almost nothing for trick or treaters.

My mom usually picks whatever big assortment has a good variety of bars that all of us like. Some years, we get a ton of kids and all of it is gone, but other years, we get three people. Our street has one streetlight and most of the time, it's out. Since it's so dark, most people bypass our street. Also, we're usually only one of two houses on our street that passes out candy.

The last couple of years we've been stuck with too many leftovers. If the outdoor light stays off, the kids don't bother coming by, so no more candy.
