Gas or Charcoal? How do you prepare your meat?

Contributor: El-Jaro El-Jaro
Some people like to cook with propane (Butane is a bastard's gas). Some prefer the taste of charcoal instead. Which do you prefer?

Gimme gas! Propane tastes so clean.

My favourite method though, is meat cooked over a hardwood fire (maple, birch)! THAT is the BEST! We use a propane bbq at home and, when there's a fire ban, for camping... mmm... now I'm hungry...rats....
positive note: going camping next week for 5 days!

We switched to a Big Green Egg, which uses a special charcoal (burns to nothing and lasts forever). We will never go back to propane- we always hated that "gas" taste on the meat. With some of the special woods for flavor, it is like cooking over a real fire...Awesome!

I can appreciate the different flavors or lack thereof with different cooking methods. As long as the food is cooked well, I don't really care one way or the other.

I don't care one way or another, but everyone I know raves about charcoal.

Wood ... brats over willow twigs, venison burgers over apple wood ... most anything smoked with hickory and mesquite.

Gah. I miss real wood and real meat. We don't have either in Florida.

Anonymous Quote (which describes my father pretty well): "Just gimme the cow and a lit match to wave under it and I'll be fine."

I prefer charcoal for most things, but, gas is good when the cooking time in comparison with the prepping time is just inefficient. I'm looking at you hamburgers and hot dogs.

For quick picnics at the park or when you just really want a grilled hamburger asap, gas. For a steak, chicken, or anything else, charcoal.

A propane grill that is tuned properly creates only heat - it should not affect the flavor of the food. The same is true for properly prepared charcoal. If there is a flavor effect from either, it would be caused by incomplete combustion or a dirty grates

If you want flavor other than the meat or seasonings on the meat, you can add wood chips to either propane or charcoal.

My dad likes his Big Green Egg with wood chips added.

I like the taste added by a good charcoal grill, but it is hard to beat the convenience of propane! I grill every chance I get, so I would be broke if I had to fill the grill with charcoal every time! I usually go through 2.5-3 grill tanks in a summer.

That last option is supposed to say "under a Bic", but Fidget got in the way when I was typing.

Oh ya, Woody's Pizza in Colorado has some of the best I have tried. Yummmmy! I tried it once with cheapy pizza and it worked ok.

Brats, dogs and burgers get the gas treatment. Backstraps, cow steaks and veggies get the charcoal. Medium rare for me.

All other meat gets smoked over apple wood or hickory.

my BBQ is natural gas. I am waiting to get some more land, then I will build a smoke house and have more room on a deck for a wood burning BBQ.

HAHA! Gross!

I like it well and I dont care what kind of flame cooks it. In the building there is no fire allowed so I take it when I can get it.

We have a gas bbq that we use to prepare our meat or veggies and such. I can remember my Dad doing a lot of swearing about the charcoal grill we had and trying to bbq things in it.
