Have you ever heard of Friendship Bread?

Contributor: MilitaryLove MilitaryLove
Has anyone heard of "Friendship Bread"? It's a sourdough bread I think where you are given a starter, put more stuff like milk, vinegar, idk in it then after a few days give half of your starter to someone else??

If anyone knows what I am talking about please help, I have been looking for the recipe for a while now

I always make a mess of it around the 3rd day. I think because my house is too cold. Read somewhere on the internet to put it in your oven with just the light on to keep it warm. Haven't tried it yet, but will if I ever feel ambitious again.

Let me know how yours turns out!!

I LOOOVE friendship bread! I never give it out to anyone because, well, no one I know wants a fussy "baby" to deal with in their kitchen, so I keep it all to myself and when I've frozen bread enough for a year I let the starter die. My sister I believe has a recipe, I'll share when I can get my hands on it!

I have, but I've never known anyone who loved making bread enough to do it with.

It keeps making more and more and more bread. o_o It reproduces so quickly, you don't even know what to do with it after awhile

Friendship bread always kind of freaks me out. My bffl received some starter from her sister so we proceeded to make some... it was majorly time consuming, tasted horrible and the ick factor of just HOW OLD this bread was freaked me out.

I did once, and I managed to keep it going for a week ...

Then I had a breakdown and my irresponsible ex-husband wouldn't look after it while I was in the crisis center.

I miss having it. It was really good.

LOL. No, but it sounds a lot like fermented bread, is that correct? I would do a search on it. Are you wanting to make it? You could probably do it easily with some kefir & yeast. That's neat though, that you give some to a friend. I wish I knew the exact product, but I don't. I'm sorry.

Was thinking as I saw your post again... If you really want to get into bread making, there is a really good cook book, The Bread Baker's Apprentice. There are different kinds of starters in there. I was into bread baking a while back and got it. I learned so much!!! Most of the breads are time consuming, but well worth it! My favorites to make (EAT!) were English Muffins, pizza dough, and focaccia. The ciabatta is VERY good, but takes all day and starts the night before. Anyway... just thought I'd share.

Amish Friendship Bread is one of my favorites. I've been thinking about starting a recipe and sharing with our new neighbors. I found this starter recipe. Is this what you're looking for?

I will have to look into getting that book. I can't spend too much time on making bread due to college, but making homemade pizza seems a lot healthier then always ordering Pizza Hut!!

I've never heard of this until now.

It reminds me of the concept of making yogurt, though; I've heard you can make a starter mix of that, then keep making batches from it.

So I guess theoretically you could make "friendship versions" of any type of food that involves fermentation
