Eden Cooks - Ribs and a Whiskey Sour - Mon. May 20 at 8pm EST

Contributor: Antipova Antipova

Is everyone ready for the May meeting of Eden Cooks? To get you geared up for the summer, and Memorial day, we're going to feature tender, juicy ribs. You'll be the star of any cookout when you can produce a platefull of spicy, or sweet, or tangy meat to suit your guests' tastes. Coupled with a classic from-scratch whiskey sour, there's nothing that makes a better weekend celebration meal.

Right in this very thread, anyone and everyone is welcome to come and learn to prepare the featured meal from descriptions and pictures I'll bring. Idea sharing is always one of my favorite parts of the meeting---you can get tips from other Edenites handy in the kitchen or at the grill. Plus, Eden Points are awarded to participants.

So be sure to come right here at 8pm EST on Monday May 20th to catch all the fun. I apologize for this post going up so late, I was traveling and my smartphone wouldn't let me post anything. Posting in this thread gets you a reminder on your wall the day-of to help you remember the meeting, so let us know if you're excited, or if you have recipes to share!

Y'all, despite my very quietness this week I am really looking forward to sharing this meeting with you! It's hard to post when I'm traveling but these ribs came out better than I've had at restaurants. And I bet we can all learn more together!

I could definitely go for a whiskey sour. They're one of my favorite drinks to make from scratch and make a great barbecue accompaniment for those of us who don't like beer.

I'm hoping this does't get cancelled in the wake of all the upheaval...*crosses fingers*

Just a half hour to go! And I just got back to internet, but here's some proof of what we've got coming up:

I think I would enjoy that too, it seems like it would be even more of an art.

I was actually surprised when I sat down and realized it, too---I ate grilled food all the time growing up, and it wasn't until I was preparing for this meeting that I realized I had never actually grilled before---mom and I always did the prep work and side dishes and my dad always was at the grill. It seemed really strange, because my family is not stuck hard in gender roles, but that one was totally never even questioned.
I asked a bunch of friends, even ones who grew up with just one parent, and not a single girl I knew was very familiar with grilling.
So how many women are in the meeting tonight? Let's empower ourselves and learn how we can become grillmasters too!

Know how. Just don't like to. I do light it (and occasionally do the actual grilling) if my husband was going to do it but is running late.

Growing up, my dad always grilled and my mom was always the baker. With my partner though, we end up splitting the grilling duties pretty evenly. I love grilling on a charcoal grill.

You guys are going to school me on this meeting, then But I can at least help with meat science and chemistry questions, and the Systems Approach to grilling!

This is our quarterly Cocktail Meeting too, and I'm going to show you probably my favorite summer cocktail, the whiskey sour.

And I'll admit up front, I half-learned-half-crea ted this version of the whiskey sour years ago, so I know it and have taught it to anybody I'm making drinks with.

The ribs, on the other hand, we actually decided to feature back when Stormy was around, but I had to learn everything by myself. I have to admit, for my first attempt at a new cooking medium, these were really tasty. I can usually only eat 3 sections (bone-meat as one section) of ribs and... I might have eaten 8. I actually liked them a lot better than the ribs I had at the Outback Steakhouse when I was trying to learn what ribs should be like.

But! Of course this means, if you know a lot (or even a little) about grilling, and I say something dumb, please tell me! We can all learn.

Sheesh, this'll learn me to go on vacation when I've got a cooks meeting coming up. Invite your friends, guys, even right now!
