Chocolate Molten Lava Cakes: Can you change the color of them?

Contributor: wrecklesswords wrecklesswords
So, it's that time of year again where I need to make a cake for my girlfriend's birthday.

Last year I made her a giant chocolate molten lava cake. This year, I'd like to make a few smaller ones since we might have an actual party for her. However, I'd like to make them yellow. The reasoning behind that is that She's not a big huge fan of cake, period, so that strikes out my idea to have a Spongebob birthday cake made. She loves Spongebob and molten lava cake is the only kind of cake she really enjoys.

So... for you more experienced bakers out there, is there a way to keep the cake chocolate in flavor, but yellow in color?

Well.... the question is, what kind of chocolate are you using in the recipe? If you're using a chocolate bar, you can replace it with white chocolate with yellow food coloring or white chocolate that has been colored already (cake decorating store or craft store). Only problem with that is swapping white chocolate for regular chocolate will alter the texture of the cake. White chocolate is just cocobutter, milk and sugar (no chocolate). Even if you are using cocoa powder, you can still swap it for white chocolate. It would just take some reading on the internet how to, but still the problem remains that the texture won't be the same!

An easy safe alternative would be to put yellow chocolate inside the cake. Or, you could do some kind of yellow frosting on top of the cake that isn't very sweet, such as an Italian Meringue Buttercream.

Hope that helps.. sorry I don't have the answer you were looking for

Hmm, true.

I hadn't really planned on making the cake mix from scratch, but I suppose I might have to to really get the results that I'm looking for.

OOOOO!!! I have an idea that you might wanna consider!!!! What do you think about crepe cake?!?! I just made one a little while ago and everyone loved it!!!!!

Crepe Cake:
- make crepes (made mine chocolate) you can make them any color you like!
- you make a filling (made mine fresh whipped cream) you can do chocolate ganache, nutella, butter cream, honey based frosting/filling, fruit or anything you like!
- layer it... crepe, filling, crepe filling...
- topping, you can frost it like a cake, or leave it as is (i drizzled strawberry puree). could even top it with whipped cream and have a sponge bob in rice paper ontop (go to a grocery store that makes cakes and ask to buy one)
