Naming Your "Business"

Contributor: wrecklesswords wrecklesswords
The other day, my girlfriend came over and she saw my 'inventory' of painted plaster ornaments. She helped me out and expressed that she would like to see me try to sell them. I have sold them in the past and been somewhat successful at it. I even once sold on Etsy.

My girlfriend wants to help me with the painting and I would like to use it as an excuse to make other things like ornaments for different holidays and even my window screen earring holders.

The only issue is coming up with a name! Does anyone have any tips for naming a hand-made business? I'm really trying to steer clear of anything cliche or run-of-the-mill like 'Becca's Handmade' or anything with crafty, handmade or the like in the title.

I like to grab a thesaurus and use less common words that describe or state the obvious, common cliche other people use. A great way to get a business name is to search for domain names, sometimes the creative spellings, words, etc. yo have to use to get the name works great for the business. I own two small businesses and am working on two more. If you have any questions I could answer, message me I would be happy to help.

haha, well, we came up with a name that's pretty cute, I think.

We were in the car leaving Hobby Lobby (bought myself new detail brushes and mixing pots) and she giggled and burst out with "Aristocrafts." I giggled and I put it on my list of names, and then several hours later, the name was still stuck with me, so unless I come up with something better, I'm sticking with this.

Polymer clay jewelry? Hmmm... What is your current name for it?

And js? That's one of the things I like to do, as well! I don't like to sound too common, but I don't like to sound too out there either. The dictionary and thesaurus are good for naming, I think.

Oh I like that!

My mom's business is called The Cedar Chest. I really like it. She does so many different things. She does a lot of embroidery, makes wish pillows, plushie ornaments, and a lot of other things. The Cedar Chest really encompasses it all, I think. Plus, she keeps most of her valued items in the cedar chest at the foot of her bed.

I did finally settle on a name. It was one that my girlfriend came up with when we were leaving Hobby Lobby.

Aristocrafts.

I'm insanely pleased with it. I'm working on a free webs.com website for it so that I can start my web store for free.

Now, all I have to do is pull out some holiday decorations so that I can take pictures of my items!
