I do think it's very traditionally feminine, personally. Although I do know a guy who crochets lace doilies. We'd be out at a bar and he'd be crocheting away...

Do you think knitting is a feminine hobby?

Nahhh. There are a lot of "butch" and unisex patterns out there. Domiknitrix has some good ones!

I guess yes because how society teaches things. Being older no, but when I was younger I would have thought it was only a girl's thing.

I don't knit, but my girlfriend and her cousin do. I have found it fascinating watching them do it though.

A few sheep farmers around these parts knit, and some of the grassland people knit. You don't really see it in the city though.

It is not a feminine hobby.
I'm female and can't knit for crap.
I know a few guys in my life that put me to shame!

I personally don't knit, but while most of the people that I know who knit are women, there's nothing inherently feminine about knitting (even if it has been traditionally labeled as "women's work"). As far as I'm concerned anyone who wants to knit should. I just don't have time because I already have too many other hobbies

I've known a couple of guys who knit, and they were both quite manly types.

I know lots of men who knit; there are several men's knitting groups around here, and several mixed groups.
There are some great resources out there for manly knits. XD Also, a good place for men to start is with the Stitch N' Bitch book series, and also Happy Hooker (for crochet). There are spin-off books specifically aimed at men.
I think crafts like this should be reclaimed for all genders, without stereotyping the people involved.

Nope! Working with your hands is pretty unisex, with random divides throughout (like woodworking is for guys, sewing is for girls, etc). There are a lot of male-oriented knitting and fiber arts groups out there for those interested in trying it out!

I feel like Knitting is more of a feminine hobby due to the fact that 90% of the guys that knit are gay. I am on this knitting/crochet website and they have a queer group on there for gay/lesbian knitters & crocheters. When ever I see that the knitter/crocheter is a guy I look at his profile page and 90% of the time the guys also belong to the queer group.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with a gay guy knitting or crocheting or a straight guy either. But this is just what I have observed.
In fact my husband has crocheted some so he is one of the few guys that have knitted/crocheted that isn't gay. There are at least three guys on the website I was talking about that knit/crochet that are not gay.
In fact he bought me the Knitting & Crochet DVDs that helped me learn to do both. When I could not figure out from the DVDs on how to get started he watched the DVDs and showed me how to do it.

I (a guy) knit for a class in 11th grade and I wouldn't say I ENJOYED it per se, but that's mostly only because it's so time consuming and I'm impatient xD not really because I saw it to be too feminine or anything.

My boyfriend used to knit.

I think it's traditionally feminine, but it should be unisex!

My young son asked me the other day if knitting was for girls only. Of course not, silly boy.
07/30/2012
My husband knows how as does my oldest son. While more females probably do it, I don't think it's really feminine.
07/30/2012
I dislike gender categories. anyone can like anything
08/13/2012
No I don't see it as feminine. I know a guy who knits.
08/13/2012
I won't lie, It kind of turns me on to see a guy knit.
08/13/2012
No.
08/13/2012
I've seen a couple men knit, but it's not often at all! I've been knitting since I was 9 years old (I'm 24 now), and though it seems like more women do it, I don't think it's limited to females.
08/13/2012
Yep, traditionally known as something women do, but far from feminine.
08/13/2012
Never seen a man knit. I am always a little surprised when I see/hear of a young female knitting even. I guess I'm conditioned.
08/13/2012
/I/ don't think knitting is a feminine hobby. However, I think our current society declares knitting (And other similar activities) as feminine.
C: And I know a handful of men who crochet or knit.

I remember seeing something on youtube a while back where a bunch of guys formed a kniting circle. I think one of them was knitting a hammock... I think it's cool to see guys knit, but have never known any who have.

no not really
