LOL, so me waiting for one of my first students, for over a month is probably an example. I am new to the mentoring thing and kind of begining to think about what I got myself into.

This is a great idea. I will keep asking!

Seems to me the obvious compromise is for someone to submit 1-2 reviews to their mentor before they are eligible for the free toy review.

Sure, why not. Just tell the student up front that you do not participate in the free toy portion. If they do not like it, they do not have to be your student.
LOL, wow cut and dry and to the point, I like that.

I am having one of those weeks where I forget EVERYTHING, do everything wrong, and piss everyone off in the meantime. Today, in particular, has been super stressful and then on top of it, I forgot the meeting!

Thanks for the hugs and lolcats!

(Some people call this "PMS" but I just call it "stress")

Oh no! It's okay, you're here now. And if you want more hugs, I have a ton in storage. Let me fetch them.

The danger is that 2 reviews and they're eligible for Advanced status anyway. The incentive for the mentoring program should be to improve your review skills, not to get free toys. Free toys are the incentive of being an Advanced reviewer, which is what you become for graduating from the mentor program.

perhaps requiring that they do one review with their own toy before joining the mentor program? thats what I did

My mentor asked me if I had any toys that were on EF before she even mentioned the free toy thing if I needed it. Lucky I had just ordered my Gigi <3

More and more I like the idea of not participating in the free toy option myself. I'm lucky in that I haven't had an issue with a vanishing student yet, but I'm sure it is bound to happen.

I've had a few. It's rather frustrating.

A lot of people email me for advise in this situation and always tell them to email the student and give them a specific time frame to respond or complete their assignment, and if they do not respond by then - cancel the class. You gave them a chance, and then were upfront about everything.

Looking back, I should also be telling Mentors to make this clear upfront as well. Tell the students - "If I do not hear from you for 2 weeks, I am going to cancel the class" or "I expect these things..." that seems very fair to me if you are reasonable and upfront.

I don't think they would have to do one without the program first (unless they wanted to of course) because I feel like the students greatly benefit from it and they learn the ropes/expectations/etc .

I can't believe that I didn't know the free push assignments were optional. From now on I am only allowing those that work hard and prove themselves that option.

Not to put Eden down but this is so that I can say my peace. Please don't take offense.

Since being voted into advanced reviewer status is the fastest way to go, is there any real way to stop people signing up for mentoring just for points.

thats why i did the raffle on my blog... EF wasn't directly involved adn didn't have to do the legal mallarky.

Ideally, yes, but clearly idealism and reality don't match up here. At least by being forced to submit 1-2 reviews to your mentor you are giving something to EF in return for the toy.

I explain my expectations and what not at the beginning, but I just hate cancelling the class. I don't want to be perceived as a bad or impatient mentor. I think it actually was Kindred (you are so helpful! ) who gave me the idea of the 2 week warning that I use. I also let them know up front what I expect from them, but I just hate seeing all those cancelled classes on my roster.

We warn and even ban people for abuse. Yes it is possible, but I personally hope that we are able to continue these programs based on trusting the community. It would be a shame to all of you, if we had to crack down and design fool proof systems to restrict everything.

Good Question!

But if we remove the free toy incentive, only the serious students will participate in the mentor program. Those just looking for the free toys can still get Advanced by vote and only the rare few will earn a high ranking for better toys.

I tell my students that the review is their payment for the toy. It's not a gift. The disclaimer at the bottom of the review clearly expresses that.
