Which of these collars do you think would be best for a beginner, in terms of comfort, ease of care, and price? Is there another collar I didn't list that you think is a better buy?

Can't really tell much of a difference.

The Leather collar and leash...then you have both items, and not that expensive.

They all look fine. For a first collar all are fine. Collars are often very symbolic and people tend to splurge on them a bit more. But for a first collar I think most things will do.

not really digging any of those but i'd choose the leather

My recommendation is that you go with the neoprene or a fur/wool lined collar. If you plan to be restrained by the collar, tugged around on a leash, or wearing the collar for a significant period of time (>1 hour), leather can and usually does chafe. Neoprene collars and collars with a soft lining can mitigate this and prevent leaving any marks.

There are way better collars out there on EF, just looks around...

In this community, collars are a very personal, symbolic choice. If you are looking for a play collar, something soft is your best bet, but if you are looking for something to symbolize the commitment and the dynamic, you want something a little more sturdy with a buckle instead of Velcro or snaps.

I know, but I'm a college student on a budget and I'm nervous about spending too much right now. I spend a lot of time drooling over way classier collars that I can't afford.

Good point - I also live in a pretty hot area, so something it wouldn't be too uncomfy to sweat in would be good.

Aww, the page says it's been discontinued! That's disappointing. I'm glad you have fun with yours, though.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'll invest in a more dramatic one if a simple one works out well.

The Noir collar.

Any would do
also, if you've never worn one at all I might suggest a cheapo nylon black dog collar form your local superstore. It'll give you a good idea of what its like to wear one.

I would like to second that suggestion. This method will also allow you to decide what kind of closure and material you would like your collar to have without spending too much money on things you won't ever wear again.

This is also a great way to find a full matching set of collar, ankle cuffs, wrist cuffs and leash while you are still trying to decide the type of collar or cuffs you want to use.

The leather leash and collar.

Good suggestion - I'll try that if I get a chance to go to a pet supply store anytime soon.

The leather collar I have from Spartacus is really well made. Maybe take a look at this one? It's close to the price of the ones in the poll, and it looks like it has a leather lining on the inside.

It really doesn't seem like you can go wrong with the neoprene one. It's impact-proof. The noir one is nice, but I just feel like the snaps would wear down and might not fit all users. I also know that the leather collar does not fit unless you have a larger neck.
