Safewords when gagged?

Contributor: CuriousInCollege180 CuriousInCollege180
I'm still very new to this, but how do you come up with a safe word if you're gagged and tied? I am all about safety because you never know when/how circumstances might change. But I wanted to ask the more experienced members of the community how you usually go about tackling this little obstacle.

Perceptive forum discussions on Dildo Gag:

is it a gag gift
this seems way to small

Best gag for silence?
Which gag ball is best for silence? I hear in reviews constantly that it will not entirely silence a sub so...is there even a gag to completely...

Gag reflex
What do you do to control the gag reflex when performing oral sex?

Have you tried a harness gag?
Has anyone tried them? You know, the ones that go over your head or under your chin?

What is your favorite gag?
What's your favorite gag out of these three? Just curious to see which is the most popular.

Have the gagged person drop something like a rubber ball or small stuffed animal.

Always, Always, Always have signals. Your partner or even you might not be able to say anything when you are playing. If your in sub space sometimes words elude you. I know I've forgotten about our safe words a few times, but simply dropping a ball or a small stuffed animal is a great signal. Make sure your dom or you watch out for your sub or you. A dom should always provide a safe haven for the sub. Water afterwards, cuddling, keep them close. It saves the sub from sub drop which is a symptom of when the sub has a depressed feeling like one of a drop after being high. (bad description but that's what it is)

A simple item such as a ball that is held in the hand. It can easily be dropped at a moments notice. Another factor is a very observant Dom. They should should be watching the sub at all times for any signs of distress.

There's always the good old fashioned 'shave and a haircut' rhythm that you could do by using your voice.

Typically in this situation, I have something in my hands instead. Usually a set of keys that jingle really loudly and distinctly when dropped. this also works for when you're tied and gagged. We play with music when I'm not gagged, but when I am gagged and have keys, we try to limit other sounds. A key drop is the equivelent of using a safeword.

A ball or keys to drop or something that squeaks when you squeeze or drop it.

If I'm gagged, snapping my fingers is the equivalent of my safe word. Reading this thread, though, I might want to try something noisier! We typically play in quiet rooms, and my dom is really focused on my motions, but I will definitely keep keys in mind for the future. It can't hurt to have more than one option for this sort of thing.

Gags aren't my thing but I've heard of people using/dropping bells.

As others have mentioned, dropping a bell or a ball is a pretty common (and effective) method. After accidentally dropping the ball (pun intended) a few times, Mistress has incorporated a rule that I snap my fingers three times consecutively to indicate something's wrong.

We use a bell. I hold it so that even if I'm writhing it won't ring out unless I adjust my grip on it (it rattles dully sometimes but we've clarified that rattling isn't the safeword, since rattling is usually accidental). If something's wrong I ring it.

I'm afraid of the 'dropping something' method because I'm scared I'd drop it and somehow he wouldn't notice, and then there goes my ability to safeword! With the bell always in my hand, I can ring when I need to.

gagged and no free hands, you still have the option of high pitched, unintelligable sounding. That is, if you don't do that normally, and you let the D know to listen for high pitched as the safe word equiv.

Thank you so much! I was curious about how some people deal with this.
